Okay, so: what to wear for family photos is one of the most frequently asked questions I hear.

So here’s my take on what to wear, from someone who’s had to coordinate a family of six and still come out with photos that I actually liked.

1. Dress Mom First

You’re probably the one booking the session, right? Pick something you love first. Something you feel good in, that fits you well. Build everyone else’s outfits around yours. You are the main character here.

2. Go for neutrals or muted tones

Instead of bright red, try burgundy. Instead of royal blue, try chambray. Muted, earthy, or soft tones usually photograph better than super-saturated ones. They also make it easier to mix and match with the rest of the family.

3. Pick one print, then build with solids

Prints can get chaotic fast. Try choosing one print (like a floral dress or plaid shirt) and keep the rest of the in solids that pull from that color palette. It’ll look polished without feeling too match-y.

4. You don’t have to match, just coordinate

Everyone does not need to be in white shirts and jeans on the beach, unless that's your vibe of course! You can aim for outfits that live in the same color family or vibe. Think of it like a mood board, not a uniform.

5. Add in neutrals to tone it down

Beige, cream, off-white, tan, gray, olive, camel. These are your best friends when building a palette. They help tie the whole look together without overpowering your photos. And yes, green counts if it's sage-y or earthy!

6. Black is totally fine

If you like wearing black, wear black.

Want to wear jeans? Cool. Want to wear tulle? Also cool.

If your style leans casual, perfect. Denim rompers on toddlers? Adorable. Jeans and a nice top? Totally fine. If you want to go full glam and wear a cocktail dress in a field, YES, I love that too. Whatever makes you feel most you, I support it.

A few things you might forget:

  • Hair ties on wrists.
  • Sunglasses on your head. Ask me how I know. (I'll tell you. I once had to Photoshop sunglasses 100 times off a groom's head during his vows)
  • Transition lenses. Your glasses will turn into sunglasses halfway through. Try to find an old pair without the transitions if you can.
  • Phones in pockets. Guys. Take them out. Or else you’ll have a rectangle on your leg in every shot.
  • Smartwatches. If you love it, keep it on. If not, consider taking it off for the photos.

Seasonal extras:

  • Layers & textures: Think cardigans, corduroy, velvet, knit sweaters—these add interest without needing busy prints.
  • Seasonal colors: Jewel tones, earth tones or neutrals for fall, pastels for spring, icy tones for winter—use the seasons as your palette inspiration.

TL;DR:

Wear what you love. Build your family’s outfits around what you like. Choose a few coordinating colors, add a print if you want, and maybe take a look at my Amazon style guide. (Except for maybe the sunglasses-on-your-head thing. But don’t worry, I'm mildly good at Photoshop ;)
